What a sensational weekend of tennis, as a strong IC of GB beat an ‘all star’ Puente Romano team 5 – 4 in an epic clay court battle in the searing heat of the gorgeous 5 star Puente Romano Resort in Marbella -  saving match points in the process against a former Wimbledon Champion no less.

The planning of such fixtures are vital with both sets of Match Managers working hard together to ensure not only a competitive but an enjoyable fixture. When it was mentioned that a former Wimbledon Champion going by the name of Pat Cash and Lewis Burton a former Junior Wimbledon finalist were on resort, the decision was taken to add them to the fixture to cover injuries to each team and it really added immensely to the fixture attracting quite a large local crowd. Not to mention the fact that Puente Romano had local heroes Shaun Leleu (ex Welsh International), David Sanchez (ex ATP #41) and Marco Djokovic in their ranks.

With the match starting at a quick pace and Puente Romano racing to a 3-0 lead (special mention to Rob Searle who came within 2 points of beating David Sanchez in one of the highest quality matches of the weekend), the IC of GB pegged Puente Romano back with 2 fine singles wins from Jim May and David Loosemore. With the match well poised at 2-4 and after a delicious paella lunch the IC of GB team re grouped and won all 3 doubles, with the last match being decided by the match point saving heroics of David Loosemore and Lewis Burton who beat Pat Cash and Diego Lozano 11-9 in the 3rd set match tie break.

Huge thanks to Shaun Leleu of the Puente Romano for not only assembling such a great tennis team to play against us, but for the most fabulous hospitality and friendship he and his team showed us.
