Result: IC of GB 3 – 6 Fitzwilliam Club

Venue: The Fitzwilliam Club

The IC of GB’s touring team lost six rubbers to three against a strong Fitzwilliam Club team in Dublin at the weekend.

Following a welcome dinner on Friday evening, matches commenced on Saturday and were played across three rounds on the indoor hard courts at the Fitzwilliam Club.  Tim Matthewson and Tim Weir both secured singles wins, but the Brits trailed 4-2 after the first two rounds of play.

Unfortunately, Tim Weir pulled his calf muscle in the last game of his singles match and although he was able to hobble across the line he was unable to compete in the afternoon’s doubles matches.  Rather than claim a walkover, in true IC spirit, the Fitzwilliam Club agreed to another singles match being played instead, which Constantine Markides lost in a closely fought final set tie-break.

In the two remaining doubles matches, Anjoli Foster and Jo Shepherd came back from a 6-0 first set loss to win their match in a final set tiebreak but Tim Matthewson and Greg Weir came up short.

After the match, both teams enjoyed a lovely dinner in a private room at the Fitzwilliam Club, followed by a night out in Dublin.

Our thanks to Jane Fennelly, the captain of the Fitzwilliam Club team, all of the players and the Club itself, for their warmth and generosity in hosting such a wonderful couple of days.
